Light-filled Lake House Nestled in the North Woods

KarsinRating, 5 stars4 weeks ago
WOW! We had a quick girls getaway to Lutsen for a ski trip. Ann & Kari's home is nothing short of incredible. The layout was great for the 4 of us, the location is private yet a short drive the ski resort, and designed perfectly. We loved the aesthetic and coziness of the house. We are already planning for a trip back!

Rustic Log Cabins on BWCA Wilderness Lake!

CoreyRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
This is a wonderful off grid get away. We did a winter trip and pulled sleds with skis. Brought in water, coffee, and food. Made fires in the stoves for heat, and had a couple great saunas with cold plunges in the lake. Everything required work which is what my group was looking for. Wood to split, fires to feed, and lanterns to see at night. Close enough to ski back to the car and head to Ely anytime we wanted. Would recommend for unplugging from the busy world. Still had cell service if needed, but we stayed on airplane mode for the most part.

Cozy Parkplace Cabin

TroyRating, 5 stars1 week ago
We got married in Duluth and this is our 3rd time staying at Parkplace and we loved it! I asked if we could check in a little early and Daniel confirmed that would be fine. Our two dogs love the cozy cabin and being able to go on walks everyday on the trail along the beautiful Lake Superior. Parkplace will always have a special place in our hearts!

Great Remote Cabin 9 mi. from Ely, on Garden Lake!

JimRating, 5 stars6 months ago
It was great. Small negative only: squishy double bed for those used to a firm king. Not a pick deal. Wish we had seen a bear; funny thing: can't control nature. The night sky was spectacular. Swam in the lake; it was hot weather and that was refreshing. If you can bring or rent a boat, do so. We shared a kayak, and had intended to rent, but didn't get around to it. We were also there a short time. Very well equipped place; you might want to bring on more large frypan. Loved the place.

Seize the Good Life at Lakefront Cabin

JulieRating, 5 stars1 month ago
We had a fantastic weekend at this cabin. It was fun to have access to the snowshoes for several outings onto the snow-covered lake. The fireplace kept us cozy. We loved watching birds at the feeders outside. Great collection of games and puzzles. Chrissie made great recommendations for hiking and restaurants. We’d love to visit again and highly recommend this place!

Bright & Renovated- Only 6 mi from Duluth!

AllisonRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
We were up in the Superior/Duluth area for cross country ski races at Spirt Mountain. Sara’s place is an easy drive and just 13 minutes from Spirit Mountain. We also enjoyed going to the indoor Miller Hill Mall in Duluth which is less than 20 minutes away. They are many great coffee shops and restaurants nearby too. We appreciated Sara’s place being pet friendly and enjoyed a dog park and paved walking trail just 5 mins from the house. Inside the house is comfortable, bright, and clean. Thanks for the great stay!

Adorable, tiny 2 bdrm cottage in downtown Ely

ValerieRating, 5 stars5 months ago
Aubrey was very responsive. My husband left his favorite shirt and Aubrey responded to his message immediately and said she would have his shirt sent to him. The house was in a perfect location, within walking distance to all the bar, shops and restaurants. It is a super cute and clean house and the fenced in backyard worked great for our dogs.

Campus Cottage-2 Stall garage & off-street parking

MalissaRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Great location for doing lots of activities in the area. The home was beautiful and had lots of accommodations for our group. It was nice having off-street parking as well as the option to pull vehicles into agarage, but just be warned the garage is a tad on the smaller side so those with larger pickups will need to be careful pulling in (we had a 3500HD due to picking up a vehicle transmission from a local shop), but still a nice addition. The bedrooms were set up for all our needs, including their own TVs, ceiling fans and floor fans, my husband was greatly appreciative of the floor fan. Would definitely recommend this for anyone staying in the area.

Lake View, Outdoor Pizza Oven, Deck Dome, Spacious

AbbeyRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Rachel’s place is just a few minutes outside of Grand Marais. The location made it easy to explore Grand Portage, Grand Marais, and the Gunflint Trail. We loved the peace and natural environment surrounding the rental. Plus that view of the Big Lake! Inside the rental were all the amenities we would likely ever need! The kitchen had plenty of cooking supplies (pots, pans, coffee maker, etc). The living spaces had comfy furniture and streaming devices. We found the largest bedroom to have a comfy bed and great view. Wonderful stay!

Bungalow (House) on Chequamegon Bay.

NancyRating, 5 stars4 months ago
We enjoyed the cute house so much. Very clean, nice beds, it had many thoughtful items for us such as extra kitchen items and blankets, tea and coffee, salt and pepper. Great location by the lake. We were there in early November and had great weather but still too chilly to use patio or grill. It would be great to be there in different weather to use outside stuff. Lots to do and easy to get around. Great stay all the way around. Highly recommend!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Scott’s place and it was as described. We loved the breathtaking views, stunning sunsets and the peaceful, quiet surroundings. The kitchen was lovely and well-equipped, making it easy to prepare meals while taking in the scenery. The space was bright, spacious, and comfortable, with radiant heating that made it feel extra cozy. Scott was an excellent host - he was super responsive and provided all the necessary information well in advance. We highly recommend this place and would love to stay again!

Lighthouse Point Retreat |10min walk to Lighthouse

AnitaRating, 5 stars1 month ago
I’ve owned my share of older homes, so I’m aware of the quirks they acquire with age. For an older home with radiator heat, this house was always cozy in the thick of winter. During our stay we experienced an active noisy sump pump that appeared to be frozen as it exited the foundation. The handyman was dispatched to examine the problem, but I think a seasonal thaw was necessary before a fix was possible. The bathrooms are well appointed, beds comfy and the kitchen had enough versatile equipment to make our meals possible. Spacious areas on main floor and second floor to spread out if you are a large group. We used this rental as a base while we went snowshoeing on the Superior Hiking Trail and spent an afternoon dog-sledding. Great fun! A mandatory meal with refreshments at Castle Danger Brewery was enjoyed as well.

We loved our stay in Lutsen! 6 of us came up to ski in February and the house was less than 10 mins to the resort. The house was very nice and clean- we loved the fireplace, record player, and looking out over Lake Superior. Would definitely stay here again!

Your guide to Grand Marais

All About Grand Marais

Situated on the north shore of Lake Superior, less than an hour from the Canadian border, Grand Marais is a small harbor village teeming with natural beauty, rugged landscapes, and a vibrant local art scene. Abundant in hiking and mountain biking trails, Grand Marais is a hub for outdoor recreation in northern Minnesota. The Superior Hiking Trail, The Grand Portage State Forest, Judge C.R. Magney State Park, and Pincushion Mountain Trail Systems are just a few spots sprawled throughout the area, offering exciting ways to take in the dense forests of pine, fir, and spruce trees, spectacular waterfalls, rocky ridges, and sweeping views of Lake Superior’s vast, open waters.

Just north of Artist’s Point, you’ll find a handful of galleries, studios, and shops buzzing with creativity inspired by the rich natural landscape and featuring the work of local artists and artisans. You’ll also find seafood restaurants along the harbor serving locally caught fish, including whitefish, trout, bluefin herring, and Canadian walleye.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Grand Marais

The spring and summer months in Grand Marais boast idyllic conditions for enjoying outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, and swimming in Lake Superior. In fall, the vibrant shades of gold, crimson, and orange adorn the Superior National Forest, and foliage sprawls throughout the harbor village. Scenic drives through the county are one of the best ways to take in the rich autumn colors. In September, Grand Marais hosts the annual Plein Air Grand Marais festival, which beckons hundreds of artists from around the country to compete and participate in outdoor painting.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the mesmerizing Northern lights, they most frequently appear in the late fall and winter. During the winter season, stunning frozen waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and icy lakes serve as the backdrop to skiing, ice fishing, and snowshoeing.

Top things to do in Grand Marais

Artist’s Point

Featuring rugged shorelines, tide pools, dramatic rock formations, and waters dazzling in shades of blue and green, Artist’s Point offers spectacular views of Lake Superior. The peninsula earned its name from painters who set up their easels amid the rock formations and painted the breathtaking landscape. A short trail leads to the Grand Marais Lighthouse.

Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery

The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, run by the Cook County Historical Society, is housed in a replica of the original Johnson Trading Post and features a range of art from local, regional, and national artists in revolving exhibits in addition to a permanent collection.

Devil’s Kettle

The unusual Devil’s Kettle waterfall has long perplexed onlookers. The Brule River, which splits into two, creates a unique effect where one half of the water drops 50 feet before continuing downstream, while the other half empties into a large pothole — known as the Devil’s Kettle — and seemingly disappears underground. To reach the waterfall, you can follow the Devil’s Kettle Hiking Trail, which meanders through spruce and birch tree forests and leads to a bridge that stretches across the rapids of the Brule River.
