Dripping Springs is a small town in Texas’ Hill Country, just outside Austin, set amid natural wonders, from the Pedernales River, which flows over huge slabs of cascading limestone to the springs that give the town its name. At the edge of downtown, you’ll find fern-covered ledges constantly dripping water into a small stream. This section of the Hill Country is home to nature reserves and state parks that lure hikers, mountain bikers, and swimmers all year round. The region is also well known for its plethora of birding sites, especially in the spring.

The appeal of the landscape may have initially drawn visitors to Dripping Springs, but a thriving cultural scene of its own has developed in this Austin suburb. The historical buildings along Mercer Street, many of which were built in the late 19th century, now house independent shops and art galleries. Live music pumps out of local bars and music venues, and craft breweries and wineries offer tastings.

While the weather is fair all year round, the best times to secure your vacation rental in Dripping Springs are the fall and spring, when temperatures are at their most pleasant. In spring, you’ll see thousands of wildflowers in bloom, and the Founders Day Festival in April features a parade and a carnival with food and rides. Summers in Texas can be hot, making for difficult hiking conditions, although working up a sweat will make a dip in one of the area’s lakes or rivers even more satisfying.

Temperatures become more bearable in fall, and the autumn leaves make for the perfect backdrop for exploring the national parks. Winters are typically mild, and snow, very rare. Christmas on Mercer Street is a festive annual tradition with live music and a tree-lighting ceremony.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

Located about 20 minutes north of Dripping Springs, Hamilton Pool is in the 234-acre Travis Country Park. While it’s no longer safe to swim here due to the possibility of falling rocks, the 50-foot waterfall from a limestone outcrop makes it a beautiful spot to visit, and the sheltered grotto offers a respite from the summer heat. There’s also a small beach where you can spread out a towel and enjoy a picnic. You’ll need to make an online reservation; this helps to keep crowds at bay.

Pedernales Falls State Park

This park, located 18 miles northwest of town, offers the best of Texas Hill Country scenery, including beautiful waterfalls and pools, lush greenery, and towering old-growth cypresses. There are several trails available for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders to enjoy that will bring you to scenic overlooks and places to cool off with a swim.

Live Music

One thing you can be sure of no matter when you make your way to Dripping Springs: Live music will be happening somewhere in town. Self-proclaimed honky-tonks host live performances and line dancing most weekends, while local bands set up at bars to jam the night away. If you’re not visiting on the weekend, simply wander down the street and you’re sure to hear music beckoning.
